Cardano News: Leios Hits 1,000 TPS in Testing With ADA Price at $0.20

Cardano developers have demonstrated what could become one of the network’s most important scaling improvements, with Ouroboros Leios reaching roughly 1,000 simple transactions per second in a controlled test environment.

The performance is a dramatic improvement over Cardano’s current mainnet capacity. However, the milestone comes at a difficult time for ADA holders. Cardano’s native token has fallen roughly 2.5% today and is trading around $0.20, continuing the weak price action that has dominated recent months.

The contrast is hard to miss: Cardano’s developers are demonstrating substantially higher potential network throughput while ADA remains under heavy market pressure.

Ouroboros Leios Demonstrates Roughly 1,000 TPS

The latest demonstration came from Carlos Lopez de Lara, who showcased a Leios node reaching a peak throughput of approximately 250 TxkB/s.

TxkB/s measures transaction data processed in kilobytes per second rather than simply counting transactions. Assuming a basic Cardano transaction of approximately 250 bytes, 250 TxkB/s translates to roughly 1,000 simple transactions per second.

For comparison, the figures presented alongside the demonstration put Cardano mainnet’s current maximum around 4.5 TxkB/s. On a raw data-throughput basis, the Leios demonstration is therefore more than 50 times that figure.

There is an important caveat: this was not 1,000 TPS running on the Cardano mainnet. It was achieved in a controlled development environment, so the test demonstrates the potential of the Leios architecture rather than proving that Cardano can sustain the same performance today under normal global network conditions.

How the Leios Test Was Conducted

The demonstration used what was described as the “Dozen Devnet,” a small controlled network designed to provide more realistic conditions than simply running everything without network constraints.

The setup contained three block producers, each connected to three relays. Nodes operated with an emulated 20-millisecond round-trip time and bandwidth of 50 Mb/s per node. The presentation also included network maps, connection graphs and performance dashboards tracking areas such as the mempool, blocks and endorsements.

Importantly, Leios is designed to increase throughput without simply forcing the existing Cardano block-production process to run faster. Its architecture introduces a pipeline involving block production, endorsements, voting, aggregation and certification before final chain selection.

That allows more work to happen concurrently, potentially increasing the amount of transaction data the network can process while preserving the security properties Cardano’s consensus system is designed around.

The Next Challenge Is Making Those Numbers Work in the Real World

The demonstration indicates that raw throughput itself may no longer be the biggest technical obstacle.

According to the presentation, much of the remaining work centers on Cardano’s network stack. Developers need to tune and optimize how data moves between nodes so that the high throughput seen in the controlled environment can survive latency, bandwidth differences and other complications present across the public internet.

That’s an important distinction for ADA holders. A laboratory demonstration of 1,000 TPS is encouraging, but it isn’t equivalent to Cardano mainnet processing 1,000 TPS sustainably.

The next major test will be whether developers can maintain high performance as conditions become progressively closer to the real network. The presentation also referenced the Musashi Dojo testnet and related development resources, with another monthly Leios update scheduled for September 30.

Could Leios Reach Cardano Mainnet This Year?

There is growing attention around the possibility of Leios reaching Cardano mainnet before the end of 2026.

If that timeline is achieved, the upgrade could substantially expand Cardano’s transaction-processing capacity. Greater throughput would be particularly important if the network wants to accommodate much higher usage from DeFi, payments and other applications without congestion becoming a major bottleneck.

Still, the year-end timeline should be treated as a possibility rather than a guaranteed launch date. The development team still has network-layer optimization and real-world testing to complete, and technical upgrades can be delayed when additional work is required.

The 1,000 TPS demonstration is therefore best viewed as evidence that the architecture can reach high throughput under controlled conditions. Turning that into reliable mainnet performance is the next challenge.

ADA Price Falls to $0.20 Despite the Leios Progress

Unfortunately for Cardano holders, technical development isn’t translating into stronger ADA price action right now.

ADA has dropped approximately 2.5% today and is trading around $0.20. That leaves the token close to an important psychological level after an already difficult period for Cardano’s price.

The disconnect illustrates an important reality for crypto investors: protocol improvements do not automatically create immediate demand for the native token. Even a major scaling upgrade such as Leios has to translate into greater network usage, applications, liquidity and economic activity before investors can assess its longer-term effect on ADA.

For now, the two stories could hardly look more different. Cardano’s developers are demonstrating throughput around 1,000 simple transactions per second in testing, while ADA itself continues struggling around $0.20.
