Ripple’s long-serving Chief Technology Officer, David Schwartz, has announced he will step down from his day-to-day role at the end of this year, marking the end of an era for both the company and the wider XRP community.
In a heartfelt message shared on X, Schwartz reflected on his four decades in tech, from working with the NSA to witnessing Bitcoin’s earliest days, before co-founding and helping build the XRP Ledger. “I’ve spent more than 13 years at Ripple,” he wrote. “It’s been one of the greatest honors and experiences of my life, second only to my amazing family.”
Schwartz, who is widely known in the community by his handle JoelKatz, confirmed he isn’t leaving the ecosystem entirely. Instead, he plans to continue contributing to XRPL development in a more hands-on capacity and will also join Ripple’s Board of Directors. “Be warned, I’m not going away from the XRP community. You haven’t seen the last of me (now, or ever),” he added.
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse reacted with both gratitude and humor, calling Schwartz “a legend” and hinting that their weekly meetings will continue. “I’m glad you won’t be far as you join the Ripple board, continuing to impart your deep crypto wisdom and guidance… Wait, does this mean you’re my boss now!?” he joked in a post.
The smartest (and maybe the funniest) person I know. A true OG in crypto with the conviction and vision to see what others couldn’t – you are a legend. Thank you David for everything you’ve done for the industry, for Ripple and for the XRP Ledger. We are all forever grateful…… https://t.co/tt4uX4JlkV

For many in the XRP community, Schwartz’s departure from the CTO role underscores the end of one chapter but also highlights his ongoing commitment. He has already been running his own XRPL node, researching new XRP use cases, and interacting directly with builders. His transition to CTO Emeritus and Board Member ensures his influence will remain at the heart of Ripple’s mission.
The announcement has been met with a wave of appreciation across the crypto space, with community members and industry leaders thanking Schwartz for his vision, contributions, and unwavering presence. As Ripple looks ahead to its next phase of growth, Schwartz’s legacy as one of the original architects of XRPL remains firmly intact.
