Midnight has reached an important point in its mainnet rollout, with permissionless smart contract deployment now live.
Developers can deploy contracts directly to Midnight mainnet without first going through a required security review on the Preprod environment. Applications can also deploy contracts on behalf of users, removing another hurdle from the onboarding process.
The change comes roughly six months after Midnight launched its mainnet in March. That initial release deliberately used a more controlled deployment model while the network focused on stability and security. Midnight said at the time that its federated launch would gradually evolve toward a more decentralized and permissionless network.
Now that transition is moving forward.
What you'll learn 👉
Midnight Mainnet Is Now Open to Permissionless Deployment
The biggest change is simple: developers no longer need approval before putting a smart contract on mainnet.
Midnight still recommends testing applications on Preprod before production deployment, but that is now a development best practice rather than a gate developers must pass through.
This gives builders much more freedom to launch DeFi products, games, privacy tools and other applications directly on the live network.
It also changes what Midnight can become.
A blockchain can have strong underlying technology, but an application ecosystem needs developers to be able to experiment and ship products without waiting for centralized approval. Removing that restriction gives Midnight a better chance to see what developers actually want to build with its privacy-focused infrastructure.
The Midnight network is moving into its next stage.

Today, permissionless smart contract deployment is live on Midnight mainnet, giving builders more freedom to deploy and enabling contracts to programmatically deploy other contracts.
And that’s not all in our latest State of…
The network has also been moving public infrastructure away from Midnight-operated endpoints. As of October 1, Blockfrost became the primary public provider of Midnight mainnet RPC and indexer services.
Google Cloud, Gero Wallet and New Privacy Apps Add Infrastructure
The mainnet opening is arriving alongside several ecosystem additions.
Google Cloud now provides Midnight testnet infrastructure through its Web3 portal, including a dedicated NIGHT faucet for developers.
Gero Wallet has also added full Midnight dApp support, shielded mainnet balances and transaction functionality designed to reduce the amount of blockchain complexity users have to deal with directly.
That fits a wider effort around abstraction on Midnight. The network has been working with ecosystem partners to hide steps such as wallet setup, transaction funding and fee management behind simpler application interfaces.
Developers are already experimenting with privacy-specific applications as well. Noctis Zone, for example, has tested a token launchpad where its DarkVeil system uses zero-knowledge proofs to enforce buying limits while keeping wallet addresses and purchase amounts private during the opening period of a sale.
These are the types of applications permissionless mainnet deployment can now bring into a live environment more easily.

Cardano News: Activity Outside Midnight Too
The wider Cardano ecosystem has had a busy few weeks of its own.
RealFi is now live on Cardano mainnet, bringing the USDrf stablecoin and yield-bearing sUSDrf token onchain. The project backs its stablecoin infrastructure with real-world assets that include direct lending, Treasury bills, money-market instruments and floating-rate bonds.
That gives Cardano another connection between DeFi and traditional financial assets.
RealFi is particularly interesting because the yield on sUSDrf comes from assets in the real economy rather than simply issuing more crypto tokens as rewards. Integrations with Cardano applications including SundaeSwap and Liqwid give the assets somewhere to begin finding actual DeFi usage.
Institutional access is developing elsewhere too. Fireblocks recently announced full support for Cardano Native Tokens, making them accessible through infrastructure used by thousands of banks, exchanges, payment firms and fintech companies.
Petrobras Is Using Cardano for Renewable Fuel Data
Cardano has also added another unusual real-world use case through its continuing work with Brazilian energy giant Petrobras.
The Cardano Foundation announced two applications on September 30 involving sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel.
For sustainable aviation fuel, Cardano is being used to create an auditable record of environmental attributes so the same benefit cannot be claimed twice. Verified certificates can be represented onchain, transferred and eventually retired once the environmental claim has been used.
The second project creates a traceable record around Petrobras’ renewable diesel, connecting information from production through transportation and eventual use.
These are not speculative token applications. They are attempts to use a public blockchain for verification where data normally sits across several companies and databases.
Why the Midnight Update Is Important for Cardano
Midnight and Cardano are distinct networks, so permissionless Midnight contracts should not be treated as Cardano mainnet applications.
But the two ecosystems are closely connected, and Midnight adds a privacy-focused component to the wider technology stack surrounding Cardano.
The timing is also notable.
Midnight now has a live network where developers can deploy without prior approval. RealFi has moved from testnet onto Cardano. Fireblocks is expanding access to Cardano-native assets, while the Petrobras work is putting Cardano into real industrial applications.
None of those developments guarantees stronger ADA price performance by itself.
What they do show is that the ecosystem is entering a period where more projects are moving from development environments into live products and infrastructure.
For Midnight, permissionless smart contract deployment may be the most important step yet. The controlled launch phase is ending, and developers can now start showing what a privacy-focused mainnet can actually support at scale.
