Gold Price Today: Here’s Why Is Gold Rising Again After the CPI Crash

Gold price has already recovered much of Wednesday’s CPI-driven selloff, and returned to roughly pre-inflation-report levels near $4,160.

That is an important reversal. Gold dropped as low as roughly $4,096 after hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation pushed Treasury yields and the dollar higher. But by Thursday morning, both of those pressures had started to ease.

Spot gold rebounded as the dollar slipped from an 18-month high, and the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield fell back toward 5.09%.

Otavio Costa compared the move to “a beach ball held underwater,” arguing that falling yields and a softer dollar could become constructive for precious metals.

Why Gold Recovered So Quickly

The CPI report initially hurt gold because headline inflation rose 3.7% year over year and 0.6% month over month, increasing expectations for tighter Fed policy.

But markets then began reassessing how aggressively the Fed may actually respond.

Fed officials signaled there may be room to wait before another rate increase, and investors moved back into Treasuries amid broader risk aversion. Bond prices rose, which pushed yields lower.

That combination is much friendlier for gold:

  • lower Treasury yields reduce the opportunity cost of owning non-yielding gold
  • a weaker dollar makes gold cheaper for buyers using other currencies
  • risk aversion can increase demand for traditional safe-haven assets

Why Crypto Is Still Falling Even as Gold Recovers

This is where gold and Bitcoin can behave very differently.

Bitcoin initially held up better than gold after the CPI report, but crypto remains primarily a risk-sensitive asset during periods of tighter financial conditions.

When investors become nervous about growth, leverage and expensive assets, Bitcoin and altcoins can trade more like technology stocks than traditional safe havens.

Gold has a much longer-established role as a defensive asset. Bitcoin may share some characteristics with gold over longer periods, but during sudden liquidity shocks it can still be sold alongside equities and other risk assets.

That appears to be happening now. Markets remain in a broader risk-off phase, with technology stocks under heavy pressure, even as investors move back into government bonds and gold.

Gold Price Outlook

The recovery above $4,150 is encouraging after gold briefly approached $4,100.

The first area to watch is roughly $4,180-$4,200. A move back above that region could put the recent high near $4,220 back in focus.

On the downside, $4,100 remains the immediate support zone, followed by the psychologically important $4,000 area.

Costa’s bullish interpretation becomes more credible if Treasury yields continue falling and the dollar gives back more of its post-CPI advance.

The recovery does not erase the inflation risk, but gold’s ability to reclaim almost the entire CPI decline within a day shows that buyers are still willing to step in aggressively when yields and the dollar move in its favor.
