Gold Price Today: Here’s Why Gold Is Up Right Now

Gold is back above $4,000 today after jumping more than 2%, with several macro factors moving in its favor at the same time.

Spot gold traded around $4,016 on November 4 as the U.S. dollar weakened and Treasury yields moved lower. Political uncertainty following the U.S. midterm elections also added to demand for defensive assets.

One analyst believes the dollar itself could become an even bigger catalyst.

A Weaker Dollar Could Give Gold More Room

Macro investor Otavio Costa argues that positioning in the U.S. dollar has become extremely stretched and that the currency looks expensive after a prolonged period of strength.

If U.S. rates begin rolling over and the Federal Reserve moves closer to the end of its tightening cycle, the dollar could lose momentum.

That would normally be supportive for gold.

Gold is priced globally in dollars, so a weaker dollar makes the metal cheaper for buyers using other currencies. Falling bond yields also reduce the opportunity cost of owning gold, which produces no income.

Today’s market move fits that framework.

Reuters reported that both the dollar and U.S. Treasury yields declined as investors processed the midterm results, helping gold climb back above the psychologically important $4,000 level.

October’s Gold Selloff May Have Gone Too Far

Another factor is simply how hard gold was hit in October.

The metal fell almost 30% from its January record and recently traded below $3,900.

Commerzbank now argues that the October correction may have become excessive, noting that several long-term factors supporting gold remain intact.

That creates room for bargain hunting whenever macro pressure eases.

Gold ETF demand also remained relatively strong during Q3 despite high yields and a strong dollar. Physically backed ETFs attracted 211 metric tons of inflows during the quarter. Central-bank purchases reached 321 tons, their highest quarterly level since late 2024.

Those flows give the current rebound more support than a simple one-day technical bounce.

Election Results and Iran Risk Are Adding Demand

Political uncertainty is also helping.

Democrats took control of Congress in the November 3 midterm elections, creating fresh questions around fiscal policy, regulation and the Trump administration’s agenda.

At the same time, tensions involving the U.S. and Iran remain unresolved.

Even though diplomatic efforts have reduced some of the immediate oil-market pressure, uncertainty around the conflict continues to support demand for safe-haven assets.

That creates an unusual mix for gold: geopolitical demand on one side and softer yields and dollar pressure on the other.

Can Gold Hold Above $4,000?

The $4,000 level now becomes important.

Reuters noted that analysts are watching it as a key technical area after gold’s recent collapse. A sustained move above it could strengthen the recovery case.

The main risk remains the Federal Reserve.

Markets still assign a high probability to another December rate increase, and stronger U.S. employment data could push yields and the dollar higher again.

For today, though, the balance has shifted in gold’s favor.

A softer dollar, falling yields, political uncertainty and renewed buying after an extreme selloff are all working together.

If Costa is right and the dollar is approaching a larger turning point, today’s gold rebound may have more room to run.
