Gold Price Today: Here’s Why Gold Is Down

Gold is under renewed pressure today, with prices slipping about 1.3% over the past 24 hours. Gold price is trading near $4,119 at the latest snapshot, which shows how quickly the mood has changed after gold repeatedly failed to hold above the $4,200 area.

This is a relatively large daily move for gold, and the reason appears to be a combination of higher Treasury yields, a firmer U.S. dollar and reduced safe-haven demand as technology stocks recovered.

The clearest driver is the bond market.

The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield moved back toward roughly 5.13%-5.14% after last week’s bond rally. Higher yields increase the opportunity cost of holding gold, which does not pay interest, and have repeatedly pressured bullion whenever rate expectations turn more restrictive.

The dollar has also firmed, helped in part by weakness in the euro. A stronger dollar usually creates another obstacle for gold because the metal becomes more expensive for buyers using other currencies.

There is also less immediate demand for defensive assets. The Nasdaq rose around 1.1% in the latest U.S. session as technology and semiconductor stocks recovered, reducing some of the fear that had recently pushed investors toward Treasuries and precious metals.

Inflation Is Still Creating a Difficult Gold Price Setup

The bigger issue is that inflation remains elevated.

September CPI increased 0.6% month over month and 3.7% annually, while producer prices rose 1.3% during the month and 6.3% year over year. Those numbers keep the possibility of additional Federal Reserve tightening alive even though markets currently view an October hike as relatively unlikely.

That creates an awkward environment for the gold price.

Inflation can support demand for hard assets, but if traders respond by pushing real yields and the dollar higher, gold can still fall.

Oil is part of the same equation. Brent remains around $110 and WTI near $100, keeping energy-driven inflation risks alive even after prices eased slightly.

Technically, $4,132-$4,110 is the immediate area I would watch. Kitco identifies $4,132 as an important near-term support, followed by approximately $4,111 and then $4,070. Resistance begins around $4,170-$4,194 before the familiar $4,200-$4,220 region returns.

So today’s gold drop looks less like one isolated headline and more like a renewed macro squeeze: yields are rising again, the dollar is firm, and traders still cannot rule out tighter Fed policy before year-end.
