Here’s Why Crypto Market and Bitcoin Are Down Today

Bitcoin fell about 2% today and dropped below $82,000 as hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data put fresh pressure on risk assets.

Ethereum has taken a heavier hit, losing roughly 4% and falling below $2,450.

The trigger is the latest U.S. CPI report. Consumer prices rose 0.6% month over month in September and 3.7% year over year, slightly above the 3.6% annual increase markets expected.

That immediately brought interest rates back into focus.

Hotter inflation makes it harder for the Federal Reserve to ease monetary policy.

If inflation remains elevated, investors may expect rates to stay higher for longer or even price in another increase. That can push Treasury yields and the U.S. dollar higher.

Both tend to create problems for crypto.

Bitcoin and other digital assets do not generate guaranteed yield, so higher returns on government bonds can make riskier assets less attractive. Tighter financial conditions can also reduce the amount of capital moving into speculative markets.

That is why Bitcoin, Ethereum and the wider crypto market reacted negatively to today’s CPI release.

Crypto Is Holding Up Better Than Gold and Silver

There is one interesting detail in today’s reaction.

Bitcoin is down roughly 2%, but precious metals have taken a heavier hit. Gold dropped toward $4,100, and silver fell from around $60 to approximately $56.

Silver’s move alone represents a decline of roughly 6.7%.

So even though crypto is clearly under pressure, Bitcoin has held up relatively well compared with two assets traditionally associated with inflation protection.

That does not guarantee crypto will continue outperforming if yields keep rising, but today’s relative performance is worth watching.

Claude AI Put Bitcoin’s Potential Floor Near $78K

Earlier this month, we asked Claude AI to assess Bitcoin using the macroeconomic environment surrounding the October Fed meeting.

Its base case placed BTC between $78,000 and $88,000 during the week after the October FOMC meeting.

Bitcoin is now approaching the lower end of that range but has not reached it yet.

At around $82,000, BTC would still need to fall approximately 4.9% to reach $78,000.

That does not make $78,000 a confirmed floor. Claude’s range was a model-generated scenario based on the information supplied at the time, not a statistically validated forecast.

Still, if Bitcoin continues lower, the $78,000 area becomes an interesting level to watch against that earlier AI scenario.
