Gold Price Today: Here’s Why Gold Is Crashing

Gold prices fell toward $4,100 per ounce after the latest U.S. inflation report came in hotter than expected.

September CPI rose 0.6% month over month and 3.7% year over year, above the 3.6% consensus estimate. Core CPI also remained firm, rising 0.3% on the month and 2.6% over the past year.

Gold reacted quickly. Spot prices dropped below $4,100 and traded near $4,086, with the move extending the metal’s recent decline.

At first glance, higher inflation might sound bullish for gold because the metal is often used as an inflation hedge.

The problem is what higher CPI means for interest rates.

Hotter inflation increases the chance that the Federal Reserve keeps monetary policy tighter or raises rates again. After the report, market expectations for another Fed increase moved higher.

That usually creates three pressures on gold.

Treasury yields rise, giving investors a higher return from interest-bearing assets.

The U.S. dollar often strengthens, making gold more expensive for buyers using other currencies.

And because gold itself pays no yield, its relative appeal can weaken when rates rise.

That combination is exactly what hit the market today.

What Comes Next for Gold Price?

The immediate level to watch is $4,000.

Gold is now trading close enough to that area that another wave of selling could test it quickly.

If $4,000 holds, buyers may try to stabilize the market around $4,050-$4,100.

If it fails, the downside case strengthens and lower support zones come back into focus.

For now, the latest CPI report has shifted attention away from gold’s longer-term inflation-hedge story and back toward the Fed, Treasury yields and the dollar.
