Gold demand through exchange-traded funds reached a new milestone in the third quarter of 2026. This is the main news for the gold price today.
Global physical gold-backed ETFs attracted $30.7 billion in inflows during Q3, marking the largest quarterly intake on record.
September alone brought another $10 billion, making it the third-largest monthly inflow of 2026.
That followed a huge $17.9 billion in August.
Gold ETF Holdings Reach a New Record
The inflows pushed global gold ETF holdings up by 67 tonnes in September to 4,256 tonnes.
That is a new record and moves above the previous high of 4,176 tonnes set in February.
The chart also shows how heavily demand has recovered after weaker months earlier in the year.
March saw outflows of $11.7 billion, and June recorded another $9.2 billion in withdrawals.
Since then, flows have turned strongly positive.
July brought $3 billion, August $17.9 billion and September another $10 billion.

Year-to-date inflows now stand at $38.5 billion, equivalent to an increase of 226 tonnes in ETF gold holdings.
One of the more interesting details is where the demand is coming from.

All major regions have recorded positive demand this year.
That matters because it shows the current gold buying is broad rather than concentrated in one market.
What This Means for Gold Price
The latest ETF numbers give gold a strong underlying demand story.
Price can still move lower in the short term if Treasury yields rise, the dollar strengthens or Fed policy becomes more restrictive.
But record ETF holdings tell a different longer-term story.
Investors are still allocating heavily to gold even after the large price swings seen this year.
That combination of strong institutional demand and record physical ETF holdings could provide meaningful support if gold starts another recovery leg.
