Altcoins are taking the lead as Bitcoin holds above $83,000, but the latest market move comes with a warning for traders watching for a full altseason.
NEAR, Avalanche and Sui are posting double-digit gains, with NEAR up about 23%, as total crypto market cap approaches $2.8 trillion. Bitcoin also closed above its 50-week moving average for the first time in 45 weeks, giving the market a fresh technical trigger.
CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season Index, however, remains near the neutral 50/100 mark, showing that capital has not fully rotated away from BTC.
That backdrop makes a new Ethereum setup worth watching. One analyst who previously called XRP’s $0.28 bottom and $3.37 local top now points to ETH/BTC and a multi-year technical breakout.

Are Altcoins Outperforming Bitcoin?
The latest market data points to a mixed picture rather than a confirmed altseason. CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season Index is around 49/100, close to the 50/100 reading cited in the market snapshot, meaning the top 50 altcoins are almost evenly split against Bitcoin over the measured period. Bitcoin dominance is also around 58.5%, showing that BTC still controls more than half of the total crypto market.
The strongest altcoin moves are concentrated in specific Layer 1 names. NEAR gained about 23% over 24 hours, reaching roughly $4.28, with increased activity through NEAR Intents helping drive the move. ZetaChain also posted a move of more than 50%, after its community approved a proposal to migrate ZETA to Solana.
Bitcoin also has its own technical catalyst. The BTC price closed the week ending September 20 at about $81,159, above its 50-week moving average near $78,786, marking the first weekly close above that level in 45 weeks.
BTC was trading around $83,441 at the latest CoinMarketCap reading, compared with Ethereum near $2,665. This leaves the market in a situation where the altcoin market is strengthening, but Bitcoin has not given up its lead.

Analyst Points to a Major ETH/BTC Breakout
The chart shared by JD compares Ethereum against Bitcoin on the weekly timeframe and focuses on the ETH/BTC ratio rather than the dollar price.
The ratio has spent years inside a large symmetrical triangle, with a descending resistance line from the 2017 peak meeting a rising support line from the lower levels that followed. The chart marks the latest move above that long-running resistance as a historical breakout.
That matters because ETH/BTC measures Ethereum’s performance relative to Bitcoin. The ratio is around 0.0323 BTC per ETH in the latest available data, up from roughly 0.0308 at the start of September. CoinMarketCap also shows ETH up 17.33% against BTC over the past 30 days. If the breakout holds, ETH would be outperforming BTC rather than simply rising because the whole crypto market is moving higher.
JD connects this setup to his previous XRP trade, claiming he identified the XRP price bottom near $0.28 and later a local top around $3.37. That move was about 12x from bottom to top. Public posts from the account also document those $0.28 and $3.37 calls.
His latest argument is that the ETH/BTC structure has a comparable technical setup, with the chart’s measured-move projection extending toward roughly the 0.15–0.17 area.
That projection would represent a much larger ETH/BTC ratio than today’s roughly 0.0323 level, but it should not be read as a direct Ethereum dollar-price target. If the ratio eventually moved to 0.15, for example, it would be about 4.6 times the current ratio, but the actual ETH price would also depend on where Bitcoin trades at that time. The key level for traders watching the setup is therefore the ETH/BTC breakout and whether the ratio can maintain its position above the former resistance.
However, the market has clear signs of broader altcoin participation, but the Altcoin Season Index remains near neutral and Bitcoin dominance remains above 58%. The ETH/BTC breakout is therefore an important technical development to watch, especially if Ethereum continues outperforming Bitcoin and more capital moves into large-cap altcoins.
