Bittensor v440 Explained: How the New Emission Gate Changes TAO Rewards Forever

Bittensor has rolled out v440, introducing one of the biggest changes to TAO emissions since the launch of dTAO. The update introduces the Emission Gate, a new mechanism that changes how rewards are distributed across the network. 

Under the previous system, every registered subnet earned a share of TAO emissions, even if demand for that subnet was low. That model has now changed. From v440 onward, subnets must meet a minimum demand threshold to receive full rewards, with lower-demand networks earning only a fraction of their previous emissions. 

The upgrade affects subnet owners, alpha stakers, builders and node operators, making network demand more important than ever. Here is what changed and why it matters for the TAO price and the wider Bittensor ecosystem.

The core principle behind Bittensor’s reward system remains the same. TAO emissions are still tied to demand, meaning subnets that attract more users and activity earn a larger share of rewards. The difference is that v440 introduces a demand threshold before full emissions are paid.

On the current network of 126 active subnets, that threshold is around rank 32. Any subnet above this level receives almost all of its eligible emissions. A subnet that lands exactly on the threshold keeps roughly half, and those below the cutoff receive only a small percentage of what they previously earned.

The threshold is calculated from the average demand across active subnets, not simply the number of registered networks. It is also based on price data cleaned of manipulation, making it much harder for artificial trading activity to inflate a subnet’s reward allocation.

Bittensor Subnets Face New Competition as TAO Rewards Shift

The redistribution of emissions is substantial. Data published by the Bittensor team shows the 94 subnets below the threshold now receive just 12.5% of total emissions, down from 38.4% before the upgrade. Meanwhile, the top eight subnets increase their combined share from 32.8% to 52.7%.

The network has also become far more concentrated. Before v440, roughly 80% of emissions had been distributed by rank 64. After the update, that same 80% is paid out by rank 23. In practice, the network now behaves as though only about 22 subnets are competing for the majority of rewards instead of around 50.

Subnet owners close to the threshold have the biggest incentive to grow. Bittensor estimates that a subnet around rank 36 can increase its emissions by about 26% with only a 10% increase in real demand. That creates a much stronger reward for improving products and attracting users than simply holding a subnet slot.

Why Bittensor v440 Could Change the Future of TAO

The update also changes the economics of building on Bittensor. Under the old model, subnet ownership carried passive value because every registered subnet earned TAO emissions. That encouraged users to hold inactive slots simply to collect rewards.

With v440, passive income from inactive subnets has largely disappeared. Registration costs are expected to become the primary cost of acquiring a subnet, lowering the barrier for developers who want to launch useful AI applications instead of competing with dormant subnet owners.

For alpha stakers, the upgrade creates a clear separation between stronger and weaker subnets. Capital allocated to high-demand networks stands to earn more emissions, whereas lower-demand subnets now generate far less reward unless they improve their ranking.

Bittensor v440 changes the network’s incentive structure by directing more TAO emissions toward subnets that generate genuine demand. The upgrade also reduces the amount of rewards flowing to inactive networks, helping limit emission leakage across the ecosystem.

Although the update does not directly change the TAO supply, it changes how new tokens enter circulation. Stronger subnets now capture a larger share of emissions, builders have greater motivation to compete, and passive subnet ownership becomes far less attractive.

For the TAO price, investors will likely watch whether the new incentive model leads to stronger network activity and continued demand for high-performing subnets. If v440 succeeds in rewarding contribution over simple participation, it could strengthen the long-term value proposition of the Bittensor ecosystem.
